IPOB Women arrested during protest

The Imo State Police Command have arraigned the women arrested during the protest by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Imo State Police Command, Andrew Enwerem, had previously established to SaharaReporters that the women would be charged for “unlawful assembly”.

The women were arrested on Friday, August 17, for staging a protest demanding a referendum and the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, legal representative of Nnamdi Kanu, who confirmed the development said: “We are in court now and yet to find out the charges levied against them by the Police.”

The proscribed group, however, demanded their immediate and unconditional release and vowed to call for a "civil uprising" if the Police do not release the women.

In a statement by Emma Powerful, IPOB Media and Publicity Secretary, the group branded the arrest as a violation of human rights, alleging that the women were tear-gassed, locked-up and tortured.

“It is an invitation to anarchy, because if by the close of business on Monday, August 20, 2018, [they are not released] IPOB will call for a civil uprising against the oppressors and their agents in Ohaneze Ndigbo and government houses across Biafraland.”

He also accused the Police of intimidation, stating that “It's a pity that Nigeria security who cannot afford to stop or curtail Fulani herdsmen and Boko Haram terrorists rampaging and killing people in every part of the country, only demonstrate their might against elderly women, who only came out to demand for their right.”
